City basketball championships kicks off with girls’ semis

The postseason has arrived for the four Boston girls’ basketball teams that will play in semifinal matchups on Wednesday evening at Madison Park, in the hopes of securing a spot in Friday night’s City League championship game.

From the North division, the top-ranked Fenway Panthers will face the South division runner-up, New Mission Titans, at 4 p.m.. The O’Bryant Tigers, first in the South division, will play the North division runner-up, Madison Park Cardinals at 5:30 p.m.

The first game on Wednesday will be a rematch between two teams that met in last year’s tournament.

“We’re playing Fenway first,” New Mission senior guard Tianna Johnson said. “Last year they beat us in cities and then we beat them at states.”

Senior night for WR Raiders

The West Roxbury Raiders ended their regular season schedule with a 78-51 loss to their neighbor, Catholic Memorial on Friday evening, Feb. 17.  Prior to the game 5 seniors were recognized for their commitment to the team over their high school careers and presented their moms with flowers.  The Raiders trailed throughout the game and could not catch up to keep pace with the Knights.  The Raiders end at 9-10 and await the state tournament pairings to be announced before the end of the month.  The Knights, 16-3 have a match with Franklin next week.

The breakdown of the game:

1) CM; 24; WR 13

2)CM: 27; WR 13

3)CM: 16; WR 17

4) CM: 11; WR 8

Senior night for New Mission Boys

The New Mission boys basketball team ended the regular season on Wednesday, Feb 15 with a 76-49 pummeling of Engish High at their home court at the Tobin Gym on Tremont Street.   Prior to the game, four seniors were recognized and presented gift bags from headcoach Cory McCarthy.  The Titans are 14-4 and off to the city league play-offs next week, facing East Boston on Feb. 23.  State tournament pairings will be announced soon and New Mission hopes to capture a third-in-a-row state title championship.

City Hockey Championships set for next week

East Boston and Latin Academy will play in the City League Hockey championship game at 11 a.m. next Thursday at Matthew’s Arena.

MP Cards off to the city league championships

CHARLESTOWN — The winner of the Charlestown and Madison Park boys basketball game on Tuesday evening, Feb. 14 at Charlestown High would be off to the city league championships next week and guess what?

The MP Cardinals triumphed with a 61-57 win over the Townies.

As evidence that both teams played their hearts out, the score was tied at 17 at the end of the first quarter and again at 30 at half time.  In the third, Madison Park took the lead, scoring 16 points and ending with a 3 point lead (46-43).  In the fourth, Madison took a commanding lead, up by 10, and the Townies almost caught up but time ran out.

The breakdown of the game:

1) MP: 17; CH: 17

2) MP: 13; CH:13

3) MP: 16; CH 13

4) MP: 15; CH 14

Next week in city league playoff action at Madison Park’s gym on Thursday, its Madison Park (15-2) against Brighton and East Boston against New Mission.  The winner of each will face off on Friday night for the city league championship.

Scenes from English High Senior Night

In an exciting game with a week left to the regular season and every game counting, English and West Roxbury boys took to the court at English on Friday night.  English had a 37-23 lead at halftime but got outscored 19-7 in the third quarter. West Roxbury tied the score three times in the final quarter and won the battle, 61-57.

Prior to the game, English High seniors presented their moms flowers as it is their last game at home.
