Eastie takes out MP in OT, Fenway avenges loss to OB

East Boston held on to win an overtime thriller against Madison Park in the Boston City League Championships title game at Madison Park tonight.

Trailing 59-58 with 34.7 seconds remaining in overtime, Eastie senior forward Kyle Fox missed a 3-pointer. His teammates missed two offensive put backs before the ball fell into junior forward Kenny Ramos’ hands. Ramos missed his own put back before putting down the winning bucket with about three seconds remaining.

“That last play was just crazy,” Ramos, who scored a team-high 16 points and earned tournament MVP honors, said after the 60-59 victory. “I just never gave up. That’s East Boston basketball at its finest right there, those last eight seconds of the ballgame.

“This game was just so big for the seniors, for the coaches, for the type of year we’ve been having so I had to do my best to get the ball, put the ball in and try to win it for my team.”

In the final 2:45 of OT, Fox scored eight of his team’s last 10 points, including two game tying buckets.

With 1:01 left in the game Madison senior guard O’Shea Joy nailed a 3-pointer to give the Cardinals a 59-56 lead. Then junior forward Will March scored to put Eastie down one before Madison Park turned the ball over to the Jets with 34.7 to play.

Joy finished with 17 points while senior center Dakim Murray led Madison Park with a game-high 18 points and junior forward David Stewart had 10.

In the girls’ championship game Fenway High avenged its loss to O’Bryant in last year’s city championship by beating the tigers 57-34. Junior point guard Tajanay Veiga-Lee took home tournament MVP honors after scoring a game-high 23 points while sophomore guard Cadieja Mathews contributed 15 and senior guard Kayla Cox had 10.

“It feels great because we got back at them this time and my team, we stepped up as a team,” Veiga-Lee said.

O’Bryant was led by junior center Kiana Daley’s 13 points.

Check back tomorrow for a full report on both games, including video highlights.

David and Goliath set to meet in city finals tonight

By Steve Musco, BPSsports Correspondent

After advancing to tonight’s City League Championship by beating Brighton High, Madison Park Coach Dennis Wilson was asked how this team compares to others he’s had in the past.

“This would be more special if we can pull it off because they don’t have the talent,” said Wilson, whose team is 0-2 against East Boston this season. “But I told you, they have hops as big as this building, they believe in each other and they believe in me.”

For the fifth year in a row, the Latin Academy boys hockey team are city league champs over East Boston.  The Dragons, led by headcoach Bob McCormick defeated the EB Jets 6-1 at Matthews Arena at NU on Thursday, February 23.  Latin Academy ends the regular season at 7-12-1 and now await the state tournament pairings.

Scoring goals for Latin Academy in the first period were Kevin Moran, Mark Guerard and Nick Mastrogiacomo.  East Boston got on the board in the second with a goal by freshman Stephen Tauro and the Jets added two more by Paul O’Keefe and Kevin Sweeney.  In the third, Daniel Moran added a sixth goal.  The two teams met previously in January at Fenway Park with a 4-3 win for Latin Academy.  Despite the loss, the Jets were a happy bunch and fortunate to have a team as many of Boston’s high schools no longer have a hockey program.  Fielding only 11 players, the Jets end the regular season at 4-16-0.

By William Frothingham, BPSsports Correspondent

ROXBURY — After a closely fought defensive battle in the first half of the opening game of the Boston City League Championships between Fenway High and New Mission on Wednesday night, the Panthers made a run late in the second quarter to take a one point lead into the locker room at halftime.

Fenway managed to hold the lead the rest of the game before securing the 63-53 win.

“We just came out tight, we just weren’t playing our game,” Fenway coach John Rice said. “We worked hard on all the little things. After halftime we just settled down, I just gave them that halftime speech, we gotta be who we are, we have a game plan we gotta stick with the game plan.

“I’m really proud of these kids they came out and played well in the second half.”

O’Bryant beat Madison Park, 53-28, in Wednesday’s second matchup and will take on Fenway at Madison Park at 5 p.m. on Friday to decide the City Championship.

Road to boys’ city hoops title wide open without Charlestown in the mix

By Steve Musco, BPSsports Correspondent

There is an old saying that goes, “the more things change, the more they stay the same;” but even with all the changes in this years’ City Championships, nothing will be the same.

Last years champ, Charlestown, failed to qualify for cities this year after a heartbreaking  61-57 loss to Madison Park on Feb. 14, which locked Madison Park into second place in the North Division.

Tomorrow’s first game of the City Championships will feature Madison Park against Brighton, who is at the top of the South division with an impressive 13-1 league record.
